If your vet has brought up nebulization for a cat or dog, the vet decides the setup, the liquid in the cup and the schedule. Nebulization for a pet is something a veterinarian prescribes and sets up, so this guide explains what veterinary sources describe to help you ask good questions. Mayluck nebulizers are designed for people, so the guide also covers what a human handheld kit does and does not include.
When veterinarians use nebulization
VCA Animal Hospitals’ client pages describe nebulization as delivering a fine mist to the lungs. The mist may be saline or water only, or it may carry medication. VCA gives infection, allergic lung disease and smoke inhalation as examples of cases where a vet may use it to deliver medication. VCA: cats VCA: dogs
Cornell’s Feline Health Center lists nebulization to keep the airways moist among the supportive care for a cat with pneumonia. Cornell Feline Health Center: Pneumonia Dr. Leah Cohn wrote in 2009 that nebulizers have mostly been used in small animals for respiratory infections. dvm360: Inhalant therapy in small-animal practice
These sources also name limits. The Merck Veterinary Manual says the overall efficiency of drug delivery with nebulizers is low and the equipment can be cumbersome and inconvenient for owners. Merck Veterinary Manual: Inhalation treatment of airway disease in animals A Texas A&M veterinary school article (October 2025) says research on nebulizer efficacy and safety in veterinary medicine is significantly lacking, especially for large animals, and manufacturers’ instructions often omit ideal settings, formulations and doses. What goes in the cup is your vet’s call
VCA says water and medication are added to the machine in specified quantities, and the pet breathes from it for a set number of breaths on a schedule. VCA Dr. Cohn adds that not every drug suits aerosol delivery, and that a drug or its preservatives may irritate the airway. dvm360
We give no recipe, dose or schedule. Use only what your vet prescribes for that animal. Mayluck kits include no medicine or saline. What comes in a nebulizer kit
Common setups: mask, carrier or chamber
Veterinary references describe a few setups. Ask your vet which one is meant.
| Setup | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Face mask | Dogs and cats can receive nebulized liquid by face mask. Dr. Cohn says the farther the mist source is from the airway, the more drug is lost, so a mask is more effective than placing the pet in a tank. |
| Tent, box or carrier | Dr. Cohn lists tents and aquarium-type containers, and notes marked drug waste plus drug on the fur that a pet can swallow when grooming. |
| Inhaler with spacer and mask | A different inhaled option, not a nebulizer. The Merck Veterinary Manual says spacers make inhalers usable in animals. Cornell describes a cat’s inhaler medicine held in a spacer that fits into a mask placed over the cat’s face. |

Dr. Cohn says only a small proportion of the administered medication reaches the lower airways. dvm360 In a 2017 pilot study of ten healthy, sedated dogs, nebulization put a mean of 4.2% of the delivered dose into the respiratory tract. Chow et al., Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2017
Keeping a pet calm
Trudell Animal Health, which makes inhaler chambers for animals, says in a training series developed with the veterinary division of International Cat Care that calm is key because stress can make respiratory conditions worse. The series covers inhaler chambers, not nebulizers, but shows how cat behavior experts approach it: introduce the equipment gradually, including its sounds, let the cat set the pace and reward relaxed behavior. What a human handheld kit includes, and what it does not
Mayluck nebulizers are designed for people. A MY135 or MY139 kit holds the device, an adult mask, a child mask, a mouthpiece, a USB charging cable and a manual. The masks are sized for people, and Mayluck masks are confirmed to fit Mayluck nebulizers; fit with other brands has not been established.
- Not in the kitA pet mask, a chamber or carrier attachment, and any medicine or saline.
- SoundMesh nebulizers have no air compressor. Our quiet nebulizer guide shows how to compare noise claims.
Dr. Cohn notes that most aerosol devices are designed for people to use willingly, and that modified systems are marketed for dogs and cats. dvm360 Whether any device suits your pet is your vet’s decision.
What some reviews mention
Of the 1,839 written reviews on our TikTok Shop listing, at least four mention using the device for a cat or dog. One says the cats are not afraid of it because it is so quiet. These are owners’ own experiences, so ask your vet before trying it. Read the full review breakdown
Hygiene: keep pet and human equipment separate
The Merck Veterinary Manual says all types of nebulizers need good sanitation, because contamination can deposit harmful bacteria directly in the lower airways. Merck Veterinary Manual Dr. Cohn says a nebulizer used for pets with contagious respiratory disease must be kept meticulously clean, with disposable parts discarded. dvm360
If your vet sets up a nebulizer for your pet, keep it and its masks for the pet, and never swap masks, mouthpieces or devices with your own. Questions to bring to your vet
Before the first session at home
Questions pet owners ask
Can I use my own nebulizer for my cat or dog?
Some owners do: at least four of our reviewers bought a Mayluck for a cat or dog. Ask your vet first, because the kits come with people-sized masks, not a pet mask or chamber, and your vet decides what goes in the cup.
Is steam from a hot shower the same as a nebulizer?
VCA describes steam nebulization, in which a vet may have you keep a pet in a steamy bathroom, as a separate option from a nebulizer machine. Ask your vet whether it applies. VCA
Can my pet and I share a nebulizer?
We advise against it. Keep each device and its masks separate.
