No. A nebulizer is built for liquid medicine that a prescriber or pharmacist has chosen for it, so Vicks products, essential oils, hydrogen peroxide, plain water and homemade salt water do not belong in the cup. Vicks makes VapoSteam for steam vaporizers and VapoRub for the skin, and neither label mentions a nebulizer. Each item below gets its own answer and source.
Nebulizer, vaporizer and humidifier are different devices
The confusion starts here, because Vicks sells products for some of these devices and not for others. A nebulizer delivers medicine (mesh and compressor types exist). Steam vaporizers and humidifiers send moisture into the air of a room.
| Device | How it makes mist | What goes in |
|---|---|---|
| Nebulizer | Turns liquid medicine into a mist you breathe in. Mesh models pass it through a tiny mesh. | Liquid medicine. MedlinePlus says to fill the cup with your medicine. |
| Steam vaporizer | Heats water with an electrical heating element or electrodes. | Water, plus products designed for that water. Poison Control names VapoSteam as one. |
| Cool-mist humidifier | Ultrasonic models use sound vibrations to make a cool mist. | Water, and anything else only as its own instructions allow. |

One detail trips people up. Some warm mist and cool mist humidifiers have a “medicine cup” for VapoSteam, which the Lavender VapoSteam label points to. That cup belongs to the humidifier, not to a nebulizer. DailyMed: Vicks VapoSteam Lavender label
What the Vicks labels say
VapoSteam. The carton reads for use in hot steam vaporizers, and the warnings say for steam inhalation only. The directions say to add it only to cold water in a hot steam vaporizer, following the vaporizer maker’s directions. The label says it contains 78% alcohol and is flammable. Poison Control says toxicity is unlikely once a small amount is mixed into a vaporizer’s water, but the undiluted product is potentially poisonous. VapoRub. It is sold as an ointment. The label says for external use only, not by mouth or in the nostrils, and never heated, microwaved or added to hot water, which can cause splattering and burns. DailyMed: Vicks VapoRub label
We read four Vicks labels on DailyMed in October 2026: VapoSteam, VapoSteam Lavender, VapoRub and VapoRub Lavender Scent. None mentions a nebulizer, so there is no maker instruction to build a “yes” on.
Essential oils, peroxide, water and other liquids
- Essential oilsOMRON’s NE-U300 manual (November 2025) says not to use health products or medicines containing essential oils for nebulization, and warns that volatile oils can damage the mesh. Poison Control says inhaled eucalyptus oil that is undiluted or not thoroughly diluted can irritate the respiratory tract.
- Hydrogen peroxideThe Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) warned in September 2021 against putting it in a nebulizer, after a social media trend of breathing it in to try to prevent or treat an infection. AAFA cites the federal ATSDR: inhaled household-strength (3%) peroxide can cause respiratory irritation, and vapors from solutions above 10% may cause severe lung irritation. AAFA’s guidance is to use only the asthma medicine your doctor prescribed in a nebulizer.
- Tap, bottled or distilled waterOMRON’s NE-U100 manual warns against using water alone in the nebulizer for inhaling. CDC says that in healthcare settings only sterile water, not distilled non-sterile water, should fill and clean the reservoirs of respiratory equipment intended for nebulization. If non-sterile distilled water falls short of that rule, tap water does too.
- Homemade salt waterA kitchen mix is not a sterile, labeled product, so it would not meet the sterile-water standard CDC sets for healthcare settings. OMRON’s NE-U300 manual allows only medication prescribed or recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
- AlcoholOMRON’s NE-U300 manual allows only medication prescribed or recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. MedlinePlus tells you to move anyone who breathed in isopropyl alcohol to fresh air right away. Vicks marks its alcohol-based VapoSteam as flammable, and OMRON’s NE-U100 manual says not to use the device where it may be exposed to flammable gas or vapors.
- Vape liquidsE-liquid is made for a device with a battery and a heater, which is how Poison Control describes e-cigarettes. A mesh nebulizer passes liquid through a tiny mesh instead. Poison Control calls liquid nicotine products very poisonous if swallowed. OMRON’s NE-U300 rule on prescribed or recommended medication applies here too.

What belongs in the cup
MedlinePlus describes a nebulizer as a machine that turns liquid medicine into a mist. As listed in October 2026, OMRON’s NE-U100 manual calls its device designed to aerosolize liquid medications and tells users to follow their physician or licensed healthcare practitioner on type, dose and regimen. Its NE-U300 manual says: “Only use medication prescribed or recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.” MedlinePlus: How to use a nebulizer OMRON: NE-U100 manual OMRON: NE-U300 manual
That leaves two kinds of liquid, each as your prescriber or pharmacist directs: medicines prescribed for nebulizer use, and sterile saline labeled for inhalation. One DailyMed sodium chloride inhalation label describes sterile, preservative-free single-use vials made for respiratory therapy. It refers to a prescribed volume, says to discard what is left in the vial and the nebulizer cup, and is marked for prescription use only. Mayluck kits include no medicine or saline. Read what comes in a nebulizer kit, see the medicine compatibility page on Mayluck Care and check the instructions supplied with your exact model. For saline and the voice, see our guide for singers who use a portable nebulizer.

Can I use saline in a portable nebulizer?
Only sterile saline labeled for inhalation, and only as your prescriber or pharmacist directs. We do not recommend a product, strength or amount.
