Quiet Nebulizers: Why Some Are Louder and How to Read Noise Claims

Compressor nebulizers make noise at the pump; mesh ones vibrate a mesh. Check the unit, distance and test conditions before comparing decibel claims.

Compressor (jet) nebulizers make noise at the pump and where compressed air leaves the nebulizer kit; mesh nebulizers work differently, pushing the medicine through a fine mesh instead. Before you compare two decibel claims, check the unit, the distance and the test conditions behind each one. This guide uses makers’ own published numbers to show how to read them, then shows what 252 buyers wrote about ours.

Where nebulizer noise comes from

MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, describes a jet nebulizer as one where compressed air turns medicine into a mist, and a mesh nebulizer as one where medicine is passed through a tiny mesh. It says most nebulizers use an air compressor, and that the ultrasonic type, which uses high-frequency vibrations, is quieter but costs more. It does not make the quieter claim for mesh, which is why the makers’ numbers below matter. MedlinePlus: How to use a nebulizer

A compressor model makes two kinds of sound. OMRON’s manual for its NE-C801 says to expect noise and vibration from the pump in the compressor, plus noise from compressed air leaving the nebulizer kit, and calls this normal. In OMRON’s NE-U100 manual, a vibrating element instead pushes the medicine through the pores of a mesh. Philips’ French-language FAQ says its InnoSpire Go mesh device does not need a motor, which it links to being smaller, lighter and nearly silent. What makers actually publish

We read the manuals and official pages for five models in October 2026. Where a document gives no sound figure, the table says so.

Sound figures as published by the makers, as listed in October 2026

Compressor OMRON CompAir NE-C801 Manual: not listed. Product page: about 52 dBA while in use Manual © 2021; product page as listed October 2026
Compressor OMRON CompAir RE-C800KD Less than 45 dB, measured with saline at 23 °C and 40% humidity, and may vary with the medication Manual © 2020

Mesh OMRON MicroAir NE-U100 Manual: approx. 20 dB. Product page: under 23 dBA Manual © 2023; product page as listed October 2026
Mesh Philips InnoSpire Go Data sheet: not listed (calls it virtually silent). French-language FAQ: less than 35 dB Data sheet © 2016; FAQ PDF created January 2020

Read across the rows and the two mesh figures are lower than the three compressor figures. That is not a side-by-side test: each maker measured its own device in its own way, and for two models the number appears only on a product page or an FAQ, not in the manual or data sheet. OMRON’s own NE-U100 manual and product page give the same device as approx. 20 dB and under 23 dBA, in different units and wording.

How to read a decibel claim

  • Which unit?OSHA explains that dBA readings are weighted to match how the human ear perceives loudness. A plain “dB” figure may not say how it was weighted.
  • How far away?OSHA’s technical manual says that with no reflecting surfaces, the level falls 6 dB each time the distance from the source doubles; in a room with walls it falls by less. None of the documents above states a measuring distance, so you cannot tell how a figure compares with a device held in your lap or a compressor across the room.
  • What does the scale mean?Decibels are logarithmic, so a small change in the number is a large change in sound. OSHA gives a rule of thumb: doubling the sound power adds 3 dB. OMRON’s two product pages list under 23 dBA and about 52 dBA. If both were measured the same way, that is a gap of roughly 29 dB or more, which by OSHA’s rule is more than nine doublings of sound power.
  • What does the wording promise?“Approx.”, “less than”, a range such as 51 to 55 and “while in use” are different statements. Compare like with like, and check the footnote for test conditions.
  • What is it being compared with?NIDCD lists normal conversation at 60 to 70 dBA. OSHA’s chart puts a soft whisper heard from 5 feet at 40 dBA and a silent study room at 20 dBA.

On the makers’ own figures, every number in the table is below the 70 dBA that NIDCD describes as unlikely to cause hearing loss, even after long exposure, although not every figure is given in dBA or with a distance. Taken at face value, that makes noise mostly a question of comfort. NIDCD: Noise-induced hearing loss OSHA Technical Manual: Noise OSHA: Occupational noise exposure

When quiet matters most

  • ChildrenForty written reviews on our TikTok Shop listing mention children and quiet together, and one parent says their son is no longer scared of the loud noise. Mask fit and routine matter too; see our guide to portable nebulizers for kids.
  • Night and shared roomsIn a shared room the sound reaches other people, not only the person using the device. Quiet is not a reason to use a device during sleep: OMRON’s NE-C801 manual says not to use that device while sleeping or drowsy. Follow the manual for your exact model and your prescriber’s directions. OMRON: NE-C801 manual
  • WorkOne reviewer says their husband takes the device to work and likes that it is quiet. Sound is one question among several there; the workday checklist covers space, charging and privacy.

What reviews of our own listing say

Mayluck’s handhelds are mesh nebulizers, with no air compressor. Of the 1,839 written reviews on our TikTok Shop listing for the Mayluck mesh nebulizer, 252 mention quiet or silent. These counts come from keyword matching on review text, so they show how often buyers raised the topic. They are not a noise measurement, and they do not tell you how each reviewer meant the word.

If noise is what decides your purchase, check the instructions supplied with your exact model, find them through the Mayluck Care instructions guide, or contact us with the model you are considering. Read the full review breakdown or the guide to choosing a nebulizer.

Quick answers

Are mesh nebulizers quieter than compressor nebulizers?

On the figures in the table, the two mesh models list lower numbers than the three compressor models. The documents do not state a common test method, and not every document lists a number, so check the exact model you are considering.

How many decibels is a portable nebulizer?

There is no single answer. The makers’ figures above run from approx. 20 dB for one mesh model to 55 dBA for one compressor model, depending on the model, the unit and the test conditions. Ask any seller for the figure, the unit, the distance and the document it comes from.

What is the quietest nebulizer?

The published figures do not come with a common test method, and some documents list none, so a fair ranking is not possible from them. For ours, read what buyers wrote above.

Can you use a nebulizer while someone is asleep?

OMRON’s NE-C801 manual, for one, says not to use that device while sleeping or drowsy. Follow the manual for your exact device and your prescriber’s directions.
